The Natural Capital Workbook is a practical guide for using natural capital approaches in decision making processes.

The guide builds on the Natural Capital Committee’s methodology for natural capital from the ‘Third State of Natural Capital Report‘. As a result, this creates a practical five-step model intended to support the protection of the local environment. The guide present a specific method for improving the environment, based on a more general framework for investing in natural capital.

This approach intends to secure natural capital assets to provide a sustainable ‘flow’ of benefits, such as ecosystem services. Other types of capital are human and produced capital, which together with natural capital underpin society’s health and wellbeing. The Natural Capital Workbook gives means to: measure the natural capital in a particular area and the benefits it can provide; identify threats and opportunities to natural capital; weigh up the available options and opportunities to make improvements; and develop practical plans.

The Natural Capital Committee for England created the guide, publishing in 2017.
